Full transcript

The complete talk, organized by section.

Gene Kim

I gotta tell you, yesterday was so fun. The book signing with Steve, it was outrageous. I got to see so many friends. Did everyone have a good time last night?

For that matter, did everyone have a good day one? Awesome.

This was such a treat. It was unexpectedly fun just to be able to not only see everybody last night, but be able to share the excitement of the book coming out. Maybe I'm slightly exaggerating, but for those of you who have written books, it was actually the first time in several months that I've associated anything around the book as beyond fear, dread, regret. So it was great fun.

Speaking of fun, one of the things that I want to just sort of put explicitly out there is how I think about events like this. So personally, how do I measure not just this event, but how I like to spend time on anything in general? It has to kind of fit two criteria. It has to be high learning, right? In other words, I'm learning something that I find genuinely interesting, and high networking: you're hanging out with the best in the game that you're learning from.

And so my fondest hope is that over this week, you'll have a similar feeling, that you'll have exhilaration from hanging out with kindred spirits and fellow travelers. You're reconnecting with friends and meeting people you admire, feeling you're being a part of a community with shared goals, who all love sharing and helping others succeed. You're learning from the best in the game. You're walking away probably with a lot of things to read, videos to watch, etc., and making new friends and other potential collaborators.

And actually, that's one of the reasons why I asked every presenter to end with a slide that says, "Here's the help I'm looking for." The more explicit you can be about specific help you're looking for, the better the probability of having a mutually exothermic interaction with someone. So that's some of the method behind the madness.

Okay. Before I turn it over, Jeff, I just want to answer a certain mystery. I love this post that was made about the music in the conference, especially the walk-on song. I actually would like to reveal who that is. The musical director is actually MVK, my boss and wife. So stand up, take a bow.

All right. With that, Jeff, why don't you come on out.

Jeff Gallimore

That was beautiful.

Okay. How was that industry party last night? Everybody have a good time?

Yeah, I had so many wonderful conversations with so many people. It just reminded me once again why this community and this event is so special. Thank you to Sonatype so much for making that possible.

And I would like to report, I did not see any donuts last night. I think there were some on the tables, but no conversations. Everybody was great. Everybody was resisting really, really well.

If you missed your opportunity to go to the industry party, or you missed your opportunity to actually get a copy of Gene and Steve's new book, Wiring the Winning Organization, we still have copies of that available. Just go to the Sonatype booth, check in with them, and they can get you your special edition copy that nobody else will have except the people who are here at the summit.

Now, something that you can get, that everybody else can get, but you can pre-order and get the bragging rights and the discount and bonus content, is the new book that will be releasing next month in November. This is actually a QR code. I just learned that you could do this with QR codes earlier this year. But this is a QR code that will take you directly to that. We've also got information that's posted in Slack about how to order the new book.

And speaking of Slack, we have borrowed back all the time for updates this morning to give you more programming time. It's a fair trade, don't you think? So get into Slack. Look at the Summit Info channel. That will give you all the information of the things that you need to know for today. This is the QR code that will get you to the Useful Information page for the summit, including how to get onto Slack if you haven't already.

Now, speaking of public service announcements and updates, we actually have a real one. The federal government is going to be testing their emergency alerting system. They're going to be running a test today on or about 11:20 AM. So if your phones start beeping, buzzing, vibrating, whatever it happens to be, that's just a test. And it should pass, hopefully very soon.

So just know that that's coming at on or around 11:20 AM this morning. And with that, get ready for a great day two of the summit. Gene, back to you.

Gene Kim

Thank you, Jeff.
